Last month Worldreader reported that the 500 students and teachers in our pilot in Ghana have downloaded thousands of books-- and how thrilling it is to send so many titles to Africa with a click of a button. This month we are noticing some interesting trends of how the e-readers are being used. Every day, students and teachers are enthusiastically downloading a rich variety of books. Abigail Amoh Paintstil, pictured above, is downloading material directly related to what she wants to be when she grows up. Abigail told us she dreams of becoming a journalist, and she is downloading The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune and loads of current events newspapers. There are some interesting downloads on her e-reader that suggest her family is using it too (Potty Training Boys and The Minds of Boys: Saving our Sons from Falling behind in School and Life). Abigail is one example- but we are seeing this happen time and again. Our manager on the ground, Joseph, is reporting that "Worldreader can become the thread that unifies the Ghanaian family." Derek Kisi, a teacher at Adeiso JHS, has a staggering reading appetite- downloading books ranging from Classics to How-To books. The idea of bringing books to the developing world is not new. The way that Worldreader is going about it is. Our mission of "books for all" using e-reader technology has the added benefit of having no printing cost or shipping cost, and allows people to get books instantly just like receiving a text message. But what is separates us from all other development projects is that our model offers choice-- allowing people to aspire to be whatever they want to be. Thank you for your support! | |
